Mosul’s Old City under full security forces’ siege, IS denies civilians food

May 25, 2017, 5:32 pm

Mosul (IraqiNews.com)  The Islamic State-held Old City in Western Mosul has become under a full siege by Iraqi security forces, with the group denying food to hundreds of thousands of civilians, reports say.

Rudaw agency said Federal Police forces were surrounding the area from the south, Rapid Response forces from the east and the Counter-Terrorism Service from the west and north. It added that there were nearly 200 fighters remaining in that region.

A security source told Shafaaq news website that the group was denying civilians food at Old City’s Bab al-Jadid neighborhood after they had declined to help militants plant landmines targeting the advancing security forces.

Iraqi forces retook eastern Mosul from Islamic State members in  January, and have been advancing through the western side since February. The ancient, narrowly structured and densely populated Old City is the group’s last refuge, and was the location where IS supreme leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared the establishment of its “caliphate”.

Iraqi commanders say they control at least 90 percent of territories in western Mosul, and predict to retake the city before the end of May. There are currently only two other districts under IS control besides the Old City.

The United Nations said in March there were at least 400.000 civilians stranded in the Old City in IS captivity. Iraqi officials and aid groups fear civilians are used as human shields. Dozens were executed by the group for attempting to flee areas under its control or collaborating with security troops, according to recurrent news reports.

MrsClassy:    ERBIL — Former Iraqi prime minister Nuri al-Maliki,with the support of Iran, has been preparing for a coup attempt to take over the power in Iraq and the US has warned the central government of Baghdad.

According to a report by Turkiye Gazetesi, Nuri Maliki, who is currently the Iraqi VP, has established a parallel army within the official Iraqi army while he was in power in 2006-2014.

Relying on diplomatic sources, the source said that the United States has officially requested the Iraqi government via President Trump's advisor Jared Kushner to remove of 785 military officials from the government.

The US delegation has informed the Iraqi government that these officials are receiving instructions from the commander of Iran's Quds Brigade Qassen Soleimani and that they are acting on Maliki's order.
"The United States has called on the Iraqi official administration through President Trump's senior advisor Jared Kushner to suspend 785 senior officers in the army, security forces and directors of the key departments," Secretary General of the European Department for Security and Information, Haissam Bou Said said on Tuesday.

He added that the US believes that those officials are implementing the Iranian agendas, specifically the agendas drawn up by Major General Qassem Soleimani, Iran's Quds Force commander, with support from the Iraqi VP Nuri al-Maliki.

Maliki served as the Iraqi PM from 2006 to 2014 and has been blamed for the security failure and corruption in the country. Moreover, during his reign, hundreds of Sunni figures and officials who opposed Iran's interventions in the Iraqi internal affairs were assassinated.
