MAHABAD
During demonstrations in Iranian Kurdistan in the last few days, a number of protesters have been arrested. In return for their release, Iranian authorities are demanding money.
The protests followed the death of a Kurdish hotel worker who committed suicide escaping an alleged rape attempt made by an Iranian government official in Mahabad.
A local resident whose brother was detained during the protests told BasNews, “When we visited the Mahabad Central Prison to find out about my brother, the prison officials asked for 50, 000 Iranian Rial (15, 000 USD) to release him.
“Since the beginning of demonstrations last Thursday, the Iranian security forces have arrested more than 30 people in Mahabad city alone,” the local resident said.
The owner of the hotel, from which the Kurdish woman jumped to her death, has stated that he is going to file a lawsuit against the protesters who set fire to his business.
Unofficial sources claim that Iranian military forces have arrested 170 Kurdish youths. The detainees are mostly from the cities of Bukan, Mahabad, Sanandaj, Sardasht and Naqadeh in the Iranian West Azerbaijan Province.
Activists in Iran and around the world have taken part in protests.
On Monday May 4th, Farinaz Khosrowani, an employee of Hotel Tara in Mahabad, jumped out of a window at the hotel. She was allegedly escaping her rapist, an agent of the intelligence ministry.
There are unconfirmed reports that the hotel owner had intentionally placed Farinaz in the room to be raped by the well-connected agent. In return, the agent would obtain a five star rating for the hotel through his connections.
The protesters have demanded the arrest of the perpetrators of the crime and justice for Farinaz.
